An Afternoon at Wimbledon with Johnny Carson by Phil Treen
It's the summer of '94. I am at Wimbledon, of course, watching the opening day of play, basking in the English sunshine and eating strawberries & cream. My father's tickets are two rows behind the royal box where Fergie and Princess Di are watching Sampras. I am sitting next to an older gentleman who sounds similar to my father, always talking tennis. I look over and it is the legend of talk shows, Johnny Carson.
Johnny and I have something in common straightaway - he is on his fourth wife and I am with my second. After another great shot from Sampras, I strike up a conversation with him. We spend the next five hours or so discussing the tennis we are watching (as well as his own), and how he loves to travel to many of the Slams.
Johnny Carson was very shy in public. Throughout our afternoon I never let on to him that I knew who he was, and I think he really appreciated it. At tea time we shook hands and wished each other well. It is a special memory I will keep forever.
USA Victorious in Caribbean Cup by Phil Treen
Nashboro Tennis Director, Phil Treen just returned from Anguilla, British West Indies, where he led the USA Junior team to success over teams from Anguilla, St. Maarteen, Tortolla and St. Kitts. Nashboro junior star player, Sarah Beth Thompson, was part of the winning team.
The week long camp and Championship was filmed, along with a benefit concert by some of Country Music's top song writers. The whole event will be televised on GAC (Great American Country) in mid August, 2005.
Jamaica Tennis Camp
In July 08, Phil participated in the inaugural Tennis Jamaica tennis camp at Tryall Resort in Jamaica. Eight international coaches taught 90 children during the week long camp which was sponsored in part by former boxing great Lennox Lewis. The program was so successful that dates for 2009 have already been confirmed.
