Philip Treen | Tim Caldwell | Dave Gazeley

Philip Treen, Club Manager/Director of Tennis

From Somerset, England, Philip has been playing tennis since the age of three when his father (a former National Champion) cut off the handle of a Dunlop racquet. Philip was the top junior in his age group in the southwest of England and was ranked in the top five juniors in England. Philip won numerous junior titles including the prestigious "Milbourn Cup" held at Wimbledon. Philip was an all-around athlete excelling in soccer, rugby, and cricket as well as tennis. Philip was a school chess champion and a proficient pianist.

Philip attended Seminole and Palm Beach College where he was a national champion alongside Michael Pernfors (French Open Finalist). At the University of Tennessee Martin Philip was voted All Conference and All American honors. He was ranked second nationally in doubles. After college, Philip played on the Pro circuit with such players as Stefan Edberg and Tim Mayotte before having his career shortened due to a wrist injury in 1987. He moved to Nashville in 1988 and continued playing tennis winning the State Singles and Doubles Championships in 1991.

Philip became the Manager and Director of Tennis at Nashboro Village in 1992. Over the years, he has coached players from beginner to National Champions, and enjoys teaching all levels. Philip's coaching style matches his playing style which is an all court game, with all the strokes, combined with touch and power. Philip loves to think of tennis as "physical chess."

Tim Caldwell, Assistant Tennis Professional

Tim has been playing tennis at Nashboro since 1992. He began coaching here in 1999 while he returned to graduate school. Tim had a late start with tennis, not picking up a racquet until he was a teenager, and he had his first tennis lesson at age 17. He played through high school and continued to play local and state tournaments into college and beyond.

Tim's aggressive all court/ serve and volley style lends itself well to the doubles game. Over the years Tim has appeared in the state rankings in doubles, mixed doubles and singles. During 2000 and 2001, Tim was the assistant Coach for MTSU Women's Tennis Team. Following the completion of his Master's degree, he returned to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, The Psychiatric Hospital, where he works as an Assessment Specialist.

A self-described "...late bloomer, on and off the court...," Tim recently married for the first time. He and his tennis playing wife, Carol MacPherson, hope to produce a little tennis player in the not so distant future. Tim enjoys coaching and continues to work with several junior and adult players. His hobbies include sport psychology, art, reading and movies.
